Responsible Gambling in the UK: Signs and Support

Gambling is entertainment, not a way to earn money or a solution to money problems. If you are chasing a loss, another bet can make the hole deeper.

Signs to watch for

Look at what you are doing, not just how you feel. Take it seriously if you:

  • spend more than you planned, or keep raising your stakes to try to win back losses;
  • borrow money, use bills money, or sell belongings to gamble;
  • hide gambling or your spending from people close to you;
  • stay up late, miss work or neglect other plans because you are playing;
  • feel restless or irritable when you try to stop;
  • deposit again soon after deciding you would not;
  • find that gambling is affecting your relationships, sleep or finances.

I used to treat “one more try” as a plan. It isn’t.

What you can do now

If any of those signs sound familiar, stop depositing and leave the game. Use the account’s financial-limit controls to restrict what you can spend. UK remote operators must make those controls accessible, and must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit.

If a limit is not enough, use the operator’s self-exclusion tool to block yourself from gambling with that operator. UK-licensed casinos must offer responsible gambling tools, including self-exclusion. Check the account settings or responsible gambling section; if you cannot find the tool, ask the operator how to activate it. Don’t wait until after another deposit.

For help with a gambling problem, speak to someone you trust and tell them plainly what has been happening. I can’t give you a verified gambling-support organisation or contact here: none was supplied for this page, and an unverified number or link is no help. You can also ask your operator what support options it provides. If you need help with your account, contact [email protected].

Age and safeguards

You must be of the legal age to gamble in the UK. Operators must verify your age before allowing you to deposit into a gambling account.

There are also restrictions on how online slots work. Autoplay is banned in Britain, and a slot spin must last at least 2.5 seconds. For an online slots game, the total stake in a game cycle is capped at £2 if you are under 25 and £5 if you are 25 or older. These rules slow down play; they do not make gambling safe or turn it into a way to make money.

UK-licensed operators cannot accept credit cards for gambling, including credit-card funds routed through a money service business. They also cannot accept wallet payments that allow credit-card funds to be used for gambling. Those restrictions are safeguards, not a reason to look for another way to borrow.

If something has gone wrong

Raise an account or conduct complaint through the operator’s internal complaints process. UKGC licensees must provide one and give access to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service. The operator should explain how to use both.

You can check a remote operator’s licence details on its website or app, which must link to its public register licence information. That tells you about the operator’s licence; it does not tell you whether gambling is right for you.
